Flood Watch for Lake Nipissing Shoreline and Mattawa River Downstream of Hurdman Dam

A Flood Watch has been issued for the Lake Nipissing Shoreline in the City of North Bay and Municipality of Callander and a Flood Watch remains in effect for the Mattawa River downstream of the Hurdman dam to the confluence with the Ottawa River and a Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook remains in effect for other areas of the North Bay-Mattawa watershed, according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

“Water levels and flows are high in most areas in response to last week’s rain,” stated Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “Water level on Lake Nipissing has increased by 31 cm since April 12. Water level on the Ottawa River in the Mattawa area is expected to stabilize but remain high. Elsewhere, flows and water levels are expected to decrease,” she added.

A Flood Watch has been issued for the Mattawa River downstream of the Hurdman dam to the confluence with the Ottawa River and a Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook has been issued for other areas of the North Bay-Mattawa watershed, according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

“Flows on the Ottawa River in the Mattawa area are expected to continue increasing over the coming days and may reach the beginning of minor flooding water levels,” stated Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “Water levels in the rest of the watershed are expected to stabilize but remain high.”

Flood Watch issued April 12

 A Flood Watch has been issued for the urban creeks in the City of North Bay and a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety has been issued for the remainder of the North Bay-Mattawa watershed, according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

“Water levels on Chippewa Creek have increased by 69 cm in response to the ongoing rain event,” stated Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “With an additional 20-45 mm of rain forecast for today, it is likely that minor flooding will occur in low-lying and poorly drained areas near the urban creeks in North Bay. Water levels on other rivers are expected to be high.” she added.

Water Safety Statement issued April 10

A Water Safety Statement has been issued for the urban creeks in the City of North Bay, according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

“Forecasts indicate 20-40 mm of rain is expected over the next few days,” stated Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “With little moisture storage available in the soils, forecasted rain will quickly become runoff. Water levels in the watershed are expected to rise; however, flooding is not expected at this time.”

On-Site Sewage System - Fee Increase - Public Comment Period

Part of Section 7 of the Building Code Act permits a Conservation Authority to pass a by-law prescribing classes of permits requiring the payment of fees on application for, and issuance of permits and prescribing the amounts thereof.

NBMCA is proposing to revise the schedule of fees for the OSS (on-site sewage system) program in 2024.

A Public Meeting will be held by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority for Proposed Building Permit Fee Revisions. An opportunity for verbal comments will be provided during the Public meeting on:

The snowpack has decreased by 14.8 cm and the snow water equivalent decreased by 48.7 mm since the previous snow survey on March 1, 2024, reports the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) who measures snow depth and water content as part of its Flood Forecasting and Warning Program. Patches of snow remain in forested, shaded, and elevated areas, particularly in the northern parts of the watershed.
