Angela Mills, weighing snow core sample at Shirley Skinner Conservation Area

(North Bay, Ontario, April 14, 2023) The average snow depth decreased by 35.5 cm and the average water equivalence decreased by 119 mm since April 6, 2023 reports the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

“There has been considerable melt over the last week with the warm temperatures, but a considerable snowpack remains on the landscape,” said Angela Mills, NBMCA Water Resources Specialist.  “Open areas such as fields and near roadways have melted, but snow remains in shaded and forested areas.  With the current weather forecast, this snow will continue to melt over the coming days,” she added.

Average snow depth for all sites is 19.7 cm (222% normal) and average water equivalence is 81 mm (293% normal).

“NBMCA staff measure snow depth and water content as part of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Program,” said Chitra Gowda, NBMCA CAO, Secretary Treasurer. A Flood Watch/Flood Warning was issued on April 13, 2023 and will be in effect until (or updated before) Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at 12:00 pm EDT.   For more details: https://www.nbmca.ca/watershed-management/flood-forecasting/spring-2023-freshet/
