(North Bay, Ontario, March 9, 2021) Snow depth has slightly decreased and water equivalence has increased since the snow pack measurements taken on March 1 by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority as part of its flood forecasting program.

“The average snow depth for the three sites is 61.2 cm, a 0.3 cm decrease from the March 1st measurements, and the average water equivalence for the three sites is 139.3 mm, a 45.6 mm increase from last week,” said Kurtis Romanchuk NBMCA’s Water Resources Engineer. “It is still too early to predict the prospect of spring flooding and we will continue our monitoring throughout the next few months”, he added.

NBMCA is now measuring the snow pack weekly, to monitor conditions leading up to and during the spring freshet. This is a supplementary survey (not a scheduled survey). The % normal will be available during the next snow survey which takes place March 15.

Snow is measured for depth and water equivalence at three locations in the watershed.
