At a community meeting held on May 30 2018 the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority unveiled its new draft Trails Proposal for the Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area.
This Proposal takes into consideration the existing trail usage, a desirable density of trails, trail maintenance requirements, and environmental sensitivities.
The Trails Proposal contains three main recommendations for consideration:
1. a multi-use trail network of approx 20 km incorporating the existing Richardson Ridge and McNutt Family trails and an additional 12 km of trails currently in use. Some existing sections of trail would be closed or relocated to avoid areas that have been identified as ecologically sensitive.
2. a community bike park on Ski Club Road across from the Lower Lodge which would include a pumptrack, kid's learning loop, jump trails, a spectator area, and progression skills loops.
3. five downhill bike trails located adjacent to the runs of the Laurentian Ski Hill.
These trails cross property owned by NBMCA, City of North Bay, Department of National Defense (DND) and two private property owners.
DND is currently conducting its own environmental review of the lands as part of their review and consideration of this proposal.
The next step in the project is awaiting the results of the DND review and the establishment of a Steering Committee involving community stakeholders to help bring the vision to life.
