In the early 1990s, NBMCA, the City of North Bay and the North Bay Kinsmen Club envisioned the development of a pedestrian pathway connecting Airport Road to the Kate Pace Way at North Bay's waterfront. As part of the NBMCA’s erosion control program, the NBMCA has directed the construction of the envisioned parkway from Airport Road to the waterfront.

Today, the Kinsmen Trail is a scenic six-kilometre paved pathway winding through the heart of North Bay alongside the banks of Chippewa Creek. The Trail, interspersed with neighbourhood parkettes, provides a safe, healthy and enjoyable alternative for transportation and recreation within the city.

Chippewa Creek EcoPath on the Kinsmen Trail

The Kinsmen Trail is also home to the 3.2 km Chippewa Creek EcoPath which follows Chippewa Creek between Lake Nipissing and Thomson Park.  Walk, bike or jog the trail and you’ll discover its rich history and ecological value through the educational signs along the way.  The EcoPath was developed in partnership with the City of North Bay, Heritage Gardeners, Trees for Nipissing, the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre.  It is a community initiative to restore and enhance the natural and heritage values of Chippewa Creek through stewardship and education.  www.chippewaecopath.ca

Over the years erosion, flooding, development and pollution took its toll on Chippewa Creek. Community partners continue to rally to restore this waterway. Riparian plantings, realignment designs to prevent flooding and restore natural habitat, education initiatives, and stewardship projects such as the EcoPath’s "Adopt-the-Creek" program are reviving this biodiverse treasure in North Bay. Once a gathering place for the N’bisiing First Nations peoples, the Creek is once again a place where the community gathers to celebrate nature, honour community and preserve the value of the Creek for generations to come.
