(NORTH BAY – August 2, 2022) A picture, as they say, is worth 1,000 words and now’s your chance to capture and share the beauty of the region’s watersheds by entering the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority’s Watershed Wonders 50th Anniversary Photography Contest.
“Through your lens, capture the essence of nature and communities thriving in the North Bay-Mattawa watershed! Your unique views of the wonders of the watershed are welcome,” said Chitra Gowda, NBMCA CAO.
Photographs taken within Nipissing and Parry Sound Districts are eligible. Images selected for prizes and exhibition will successfully educate, motivate, or passionately move audiences to celebrate our watershed. The contest is open from August 2 to November 1, 2022.
This contest welcomes hobbyist and professionals, with five categories for adults to enter and one general youth category (18 and under).
The categories include people and nature, landscapes, water, wildlife and sustainable structures described as follows:
People and Nature: the photo tells a story about people exploring nature whether they are hiking, mountain biking, treasure hunting, or simply appreciating and enjoying outdoor spaces like our conservation areas! These photos can be scenic, candid or even action shots.
Landscapes: where the photo capture the presence of nature while creating a sense of place, with or without people. Whether the focus is on large spaces, sunsets, ripples on a lake, a rare plant or a landscape view from a bird or ant’s perspective, the photograph speaks for nature itself.
Water: in these photos, the photographer takes the time to explore the magic, mystery, and beauty of what is above, below and in between water. The photo demonstrates care, concern and appreciation for our area wetlands, creeks, rivers, and lakes.
Wildlife: from chipmunks to moose, hummingbirds to eagles, sunfish to muskey, our watersheds are alive with all kinds of wildlife!
Sustainable Structures: these photos capture things and ways that people build, manufacture, and create structures that respect, protect, or enhance the environment. These structure photos can be with or without people.
Photography Workshop
If you’re looking for tips on how to capture those watershed wonders, NBMCA is offering a Watershed Wonders Photography Workshop on August 20 from 9 am to noon, geared to all ages.
Photographer Brittney Fortin will lead the workshop, focussing on basic level photography skills on technical elements, composition, and subject matter. The workshop includes in-class instruction, followed by a hike on the Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area trails to apply the learning. Be sure to dress for the weather.
Bring your own camera. Any type of camera is welcome, however please note this is a workshop focused on photography, not on how to operate your camera.
